What is the AMATS TSMO Project?TSMO stands for Transportation Systems Maintenance and Operations, an approach that includes a toolbox of strategies to improve safety and provide reliable travel options for all users. TSMO looks for ways to manage congestion without relying on additional roadway lanes, wherever this is possible.
It emphasizes solutions that are high-impact and relatively easy to implement. Solutions can be spot treatments, such as a new crosswalk or pedestrian signal, or systemwide, such as a multiagency Traffic Management Center or Data Warehouse to improve issue identification and response time. |
What is it trying to solve?
The AMATS TSMO Project aligns with the 2050 MTP Update. The first objective for Goal 3, Improve Mobility Options, is to improve the existing transportation system efficiency through the implementation of effective and innovative strategies and technologies, such as: TSMO, Transportation Demand Management (TDM), and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
TSMO can improve much more than mobility. It can improve the reliability and performance of transit, bicyclists, and pedestrians, by sharing real-time information about safe routes and travel times. TSMO also addresses safety concerns at high-crash locations. And, TSMO is a great tool to advance equity by improving transportation access, reducing emissions that affect health, and prioritizing resources to unserved and underserved communities. AMATS committees and staff will refer to the TSMO plan for long-range and short-range planning solutions going forward. |
